Open almost any design mockup and you’ll find the same opening words: “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”. It looks like Latin, reads like nonsense, and shows up everywhere from website wireframes to print layouts. So what is it, and why has it survived for 500 years?
What Lorem Ipsum is
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text — filler used to fill a layout before the real words are ready. It’s deliberately meaningless, so nothing about the content distracts you from evaluating the design: the font, the spacing, the line length, the overall composition.
Where it came from
The text isn’t random gibberish. It’s scrambled from a real Latin work — Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), a treatise on ethics. A printer in the 1500s jumbled a passage to make a type specimen, and the tradition stuck. The famous first line comes from a sentence containing “dolorem ipsum” (“pain itself”).
Why not just use real text?
Two reasons:
- Real words invite reading. Show a client a paragraph of actual copy and they’ll critique the wording instead of the layout. Nonsense text keeps the focus on design.
- It looks natural. Lorem Ipsum has roughly the word lengths and letter distribution of real Latin-script prose, so a block of it has believable “texture” — unlike repeating “text text text”.
When to use it (and when not)
- Use it for wireframes, design mockups, template previews and typography tests.
- Don’t ship it. The classic disaster is forgetting to replace it before launch — real sites have gone live with “Lorem ipsum” in production. Always swap in real copy before publishing.
Generate exactly what you need
The Lorem Ipsum generator produces filler by paragraphs, sentences or an exact word count, with the option to start on the classic line. It runs in your browser, so you can copy and paste as much as you need instantly.

The line everyone quotes
The full “classic” opening is “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.” Curiously, the first word is a fragment: Cicero’s original sentence contains “…qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”, and the standard filler simply begins mid-word at “Lorem” (from dolorem). That’s a good reminder that it was never meant to be read as language.
Lorem Ipsum vs. the alternatives
| Filler | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Lorem Ipsum | Neutral layout and typography tests | Looks odd in non-Latin designs |
| Themed “ipsum” (bacon, hipster, etc.) | Fun demos with personality | Real words can distract reviewers |
| Real draft copy | Late-stage, content-first design | Invites wording debates too early |
| Representative real data | Edge cases (long names, empty states) | More effort to assemble |
Common misconceptions
- “It’s random gibberish.” It’s scrambled Latin from a real 2,000-year-old text, shaped to look like natural prose.
- “It’s grammatical Latin you can translate.” It isn’t — words are cut and rearranged, so a literal translation is meaningless.
- “Any placeholder is equally good.” Match the length of your real content, or the layout you approve won’t survive the real words. For non-Latin interfaces, use placeholder in the target script so line breaks and character width look realistic.
Mini FAQ
Does shipping it hurt SEO? Yes — search engines see thin, meaningless, often duplicated text. Replace every block before launch.
