Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text — filler used to fill a layout before the real words are ready. It’s deliberately meaningless, so nothing about the content distracts you from evaluating the design: the font, the spacing, the line length, the overall composition.
Where it came from
The text isn’t random gibberish. It’s scrambled from a real Latin work — Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), a treatise on ethics. A printer in the 1500s jumbled a passage to make a type specimen, and the tradition stuck. The famous first line comes from a sentence containing “dolorem ipsum” (“pain itself”).
Why not just use real text?
Two reasons:
- Real words invite reading. Show a client a paragraph of actual copy and they’ll critique the wording instead of the layout. Nonsense text keeps the focus on design.
- It looks natural. Lorem Ipsum has roughly the word lengths and letter distribution of real Latin-script prose, so a block of it has believable “texture” — unlike repeating “text text text”.

The line everyone quotes
The full “classic” opening is “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.” Curiously, the first word is a fragment: Cicero’s original sentence contains “…qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”, and the standard filler simply begins mid-word at “Lorem” (from dolorem).
